Community
In celebrating CYOG 08 a number of community groups in Cheshire have created their own, exciting, commissions for Something Beautiful.
Long Lane Garden Centre, Walton Lea, Warrington
Come and visit The Enchanted Oasis created at Long Lane Garden Centre by a group that includes adults with learning difficulties and visitors to the garden centre.
The group have enjoyed creating The Enchanted Oasis using both new and existing skills. This independent and creative work has instilled pride and personal worth in the group.
The backdrop to the artwork was virtually singlehandedly created by a small group of adults with learning difficulties and as the whole of the creation developed many people were spontaneously inspired to add in their own bits and pieces including the fish, owl and flowers.
Materials involved have nearly all been recycled, donated or cheap to buy and have included :
Chicken wire Railway sleepers
Old aluminium foil Recycled drinks cans
Old clothing Willow
Dogwood Paint
Beads Garden canes
Paverpol
The project is open to visitors Monday-Friday 9.30am-3.30pm.
Greenbank School, Northwich
Pupils at Greenbank School have created an artwork for their school garden.
They all had great fun working together to build the piece, working well together as a team and exploring their creativity.
Having completed their artwork the pupils felt a great sense of achievement at creating such a beautiful piece.
Fire Spiral
Barrowmore Estate, Chester
To celebrate the launch of the Something Beautiful Competiton the residents of the Barrowmore Estate burnt their Fire Spiral on the evening of Thursday 17 April 2008.
The residents of Barrowmore Training Centre (part of Barrowmore Estate), assisted by people from the wider local community, gathered burnable materials from the estate and assembled them into the shape of a spiral, which is a manifestation of Energy in Nature.
The work has been covered with hay, grown on the Estate. The ground around was dug and raked to make a dark brown tilth to contrast with the yellow of the hay.
It is the event of burning the spiral that signifies the community creation of Something Beautiful.
When the flames have died down, through the scorched earth will come new growth, consisting of grasses and wild flowers, whose seeds have lain dormant until liberated by the fire.
A new cycle/spiral of growth will commence.
Cost -nil.
This is the latest in a series of Landscape Spirals undertaken by Barrowmore Training Centre.
