Something Beautiful

Could you make Something Beautiful from nothing?

Cheshire’s Year of Gardens ‘08 invites all residents from Cheshire & Warrington to create an artwork inspired by your garden and you could win free entry to National Trust properties and gardens.

We want to bring Cheshire’s Year of Gardens 08 into your backyard, so that you can be directly involved in the celebration of Cheshire’s magnificent horticultural heritage and artistic talent.

Something Beautiful: imageThe Something Beautiful competition is an opportunity for you to explore what your garden means to you.  The competition asks you to reflect on the form and the function of your garden, responding to its quirks and context to create a site-specific work of art inspired by your space and your notion of Cheshire’s gardens.

To initiate the Something Beautiful project, five artists were commissioned to create an original artwork in five garden settings across Cheshire. The commissions were created at Little Morton Hall, Combermere Abbey, Tatton Park, Ness Botanic Gardens and Arley Hall and Gardens.

You can learn more about these commissions on the project pages.

In addition, three incredibly inspirational artworks were created by community based projects.  These include a mural at Walton Lea Garden Centre, Warrington, a mosaic for Greenbank School, Northwich and a fire spiral at the Barrowmore Estate, Chester.

Following the guidelines as set out for the competition, all of these artworks were inspired by the gardens they are sited in and were created largely using found or recycled materials, incurring little cost.
